How do you protect your personal details when opening up to people you don’t know online? Warning signs of scams, blocking and reporting, and 10 tips for safer chats.
Talking to someone you don’t know can be a real relief: they don’t judge you and they won’t tell anyone you know. But a few simple rules help you stay safe.
Protect your personal details
- Don’t share your home address, school or workplace.
- Don’t give out your phone number or ID details. Sharing them is also against our Community Guidelines.
- Pick a username — you don’t have to use your real name.
- Be careful with photos. Tichodex removes location data from your photos on your device, but still watch out for background details that reveal your home or school.
Recognise the warning signs
- Anyone asking you for money, gifts or account details is very likely a scammer.
- Stop talking to anyone who asks for private photos or tells you to keep the conversation secret.
- Pushing you to move to another app is a warning sign too.
You’re in control
- Block: Someone who bothers you won’t be able to see you or message you.
- Report: Reports reach our moderators instantly.
- Keep your boundaries: You don’t owe anyone an explanation; you can end a conversation the moment you feel uncomfortable.
